American Robby Ginepri will face top seed Tomas Berdych in the second round of the Citi Open after winning his opening match against Alejandro Falla in Washington DC.
Ginepri was rarely troubled in his first-round encounter against the 30-year-old Colombian, winning 6-4 6-2. The home favourite now takes on Czech world no 5 Berdych, who had a bye in the first round.
Joining them in the second round is Frenchman Benoit Paire, who beat Frank Dancevic of Canada 6-4 6-0 to book a second-round encounter against ninth seed Ivo Karlovic, and American Tim Smyczek, who beat countryman Alex Kuznetsov 6-3 6-0 to set up a meeting against 12th seed Jeremy Chardy of France.
Malek Jaziri was another first-round victor and the Tunisian next faces Czech 11th seed Radek Stepanek after disposing of Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (7/2) 6-4.
Australian Bernard Tomic, who won the Claro Open in Colombia last weekend, was a 6-3 6-2 winner against Alejandro Gonzalez of Colombia.
There were also first-round victories for Americans Rajeev Ram and Donald Young, and Marinko Matosevic of Australia.
In the women's draw, sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-3 6-2. The Russian will face Heather Watson in the second round if the British No 1 overcomes Belgian opponent Kirsten Flipkens.
American Vania King had little difficulty in defeating Francoise Abanda of Canada 6-2 6-0, but her compatriot Alison Riske was beaten by Japan's Hiroko Kuwata 6-0 7-5.
There were a couple of upsets in the later games, though, with third seed Alize Cornet being dumped out along with number seven Madison Keys.
Frenchwoman Cornet was knocked out by American wildcard Shelby Rogers, who claimed a 7-5 4-6 6-4 triumph, while one of the big home hope Keys was defeated in straight sets by Kurumi Nara, the Japanese winning 7-5 6-3.
Eighth seed Sorana Cirstea also had it far from easy but the Romanian did still manage to progress through to the second round with a 6-4 4-6 6-3 triumph over Dutch opponent Kiki Bertens.
Also, there were mixed results for two Americans with Taylor Townsend beating Germany's Julia Goerges 3-6 6-2 6-3, while her compatriot Tornado Alicia Black went down to a 6-4 6-0 loss to Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.
In the late men's games, Slovakia's Lukas Lacko and Russia's Evgeny Donskoy both claimed victories, seeing off Canada's Filip Peliwo 7-5 6-3 and American Francis Tiafoe 6-4 6-4 respectively.
