The majority of the men's seeds in second-round action at the Topshelf Open in S-Hertogenbosch picked up comfortable wins, but women's top seed Simona Halep was forced to retire.

Fernando Verdasco was up against wildcard Jesse Hutagalung and the Spanish second seed, who was announced as the 18th seed at Wimbledon earlier in the day, and he came through 7-5 6-3.

Eighth seed Jurgen Melzer will be hoping to prove a sterner test when the two meet in the quarter-finals after the Austrian booked his place in the last eight with a 5-7 6-3 6-3 win against qualifier Lukas Lacko.

Verdasco's fellow countryman, Roberto Bautista Agut, also progressed as the third seed had enough to ease past Matthew Ebden 7-5 7-6 (7-1).

In a strong quarter-final line-up it will be Nicolas Mahut, seeded seventh, waiting to meet Bautista Agut after a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) win over Steve Johnson.

Vasek Pospisil continued the run for seeded players as the sixth seed saw off Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4 6-2 in a little over an hour - he will come up against Benjamin Becker in the last eight as the German beat Dudi Sela 6-2 7-5.

Fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov was the only seeded player not to progress after he was forced to retire ahead of his meeting with wildcard Thiemo De Bakker, who will now meet Joao Sousa after the Portuguese beat fellow qualifier Mate Pavic 6-2 6-4.

More from Wimbledon 2014

If the seeded players in the men's side were too strong, it was the opposite in the women's second round as more upsets were recorded.

Halep retires

Top seed Simona Halep retired during her match with Annika Beck with a shoulder injury, with the German progressing into a quarter-final against Magdalena Rybarikova.

The French Open finalist had taken the first set 7-5 and was on serve at 2-3 in the second set, but decided she could not continue, perhaps cautious of aggravating the injury ahead of the start of Wimbledon next week.

Another retirement saw fourth seed Carla Suarez Navarro forced out of the tournament at the expense of Jie Zheng, who led 7-5 0-1 at the time and will go on to meet Elina Svitolina.

The Ukrainian also overcame a seed, with sixth seed Kirsten Flipkins beaten 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

Eighth seed Klara Koukalova did manage to keep her place in the competition thanks to straight sets victory over qualifier Mona Barthel

Kazakhstani Yaroslava Shvedova will provide stern quarter-final opposition for Koukalova following her win over wildcard Michaella Krajicek.

Qualifier Coco Vandeweghe came out on top of an all-American second round clash with Vania King after the latter retired at the early stages of a deciding third set - Vandeweghe will now face seventh seed Garbine Muguruza for a place in the semi-finals.
