Top seed Angelique Kerber reached the quarter-finals of the Nurnberger Versicherungscup with a convincing victory over fellow German Anna-Lena Friedsam on Wednesday.

The world number nine needed one hour and 27 minutes to dismiss Friedsam 6-2 7-6 (7-0) and she will next face Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

Carolina Garcia - the seventh seed - is preparing for a last-eight showdown with Italy's Karin Knapp after getting the better of Dinah Pfizenmaier over three sets.

The Frenchwoman, who last month claimed the Copa Colsanitas title in Bogota, powered six aces past German hopeful Pfizenmaier on her way to winning 7-5 5-7 6-3.

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine later survived a stern examination from Beatriz Garcia Vidagany to clinch a 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 victory, but there was still time for another seed to fall.

An all-German clash between Mona Barthel and eighth seed Annika Beck saw the former triumph 6-2 6-4 to meet Svitolina in the quarter-finals.
