Stanislas Wawrinka struggled to contain his emotions after beating "best of all time" Roger Federer to add the Monte Carlo Masters to his recent Australian Open title.

Wawrinka, who clinched his first Grand Slam at Melbourne Park in January, defeated his friend and Swiss compatriot 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 to lay down a serious marker ahead of the French Open in June.

It was the 29-year-old's first Masters victory and he said: "It's been an incredible week for me. I'm really happy.

"After having won a first grand slam title, to finally win a Masters 1000 is unbelievable - outstanding.

"Roger has done incredible things in his career. He's the best of all time for me and it was an honour to play him in the final and to win.

"It's always special for me to play against him and I hope him and me will have a great year."

Federer and Wawrinka will team up for Switzerland in the Davis Cup semi-finals and the champion added: "I hope this will be a fine year for Switzerland."

Federer, who is yet to win a Monte Carlo Masters in four attempts, said: "Congratulations to Stan. I think he really found his range and started to hit bigger and deeper. He didn't miss that many second serve returns anymore.

"It was a good week for me. I'm not really disappointed since it was Stan I lost against."

Federer, addressing his friend, added: "Stan, it was an incredible week for you. I hope you will continue like this for the years to come."
