Top seed Dominika Cibulkova reached the quarter-finals of the BMW Malaysian Open with a straight-sets victory over Hsieh Su-wei in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Cibulkova lost just three games in securing a 6-1 6-2 win, although the 24-year-old Slovakian had to perhaps work harder than the scoreline suggested.

The world No 10 raced into a 4-0 lead but lost her serve in the next game and faced a total of seven break points before closing out the set.

Hsieh also recovered from an early break down in the second set to level at 2-2, but Cibulkova took the next four games and eventually sealed victory after a lengthy final game in one hour and 14 minutes.

Third seed Karolina Pliskova also moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-3 win over Chinese qualifier Ying-Ying Duan, but seventh seed Donna Vekic was made to work far harder before overcoming Pliskova's sister Kristyna in three sets.

Vekic lost the opening set but hit back to win 1-6 6-3 7-5 in a match lasting just over two hours.

Turkey's Cagla Buyukakcay will face Pliskova in the last eight after defeating Tadeja Majeric 6-4 6-4, while Chinese second seed Shuai Zhang beat wild card compatriot Ling Zhang 6-3 4-6 6-0.
