Alexandr Dolgopolov: Powered through against Ernests Gulbis in Monte Carlo
Alexandr Dolgopolov powered through his opening match against Ernests Gulbis at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters on Sunday.
The 17th seed rolled over Gulbis 6-2 6-4 in 83 minutes at the clay-court Masters event, dropping only one service game and breaking the Latvian four times on his way to victory.
In other action, Jeremy Chardy came back from a set down to beat Igor Sijsling 1-6 6-2 7-6 (7-5) in a touch over two hours.
The Frenchman, who will next play sixth seed David Ferrer of Spain, said: "I was tense at the beginning of the match, although I've been here for a week already and I practised well and felt ready for the match.
"But even after losing the first set 6-1, I knew that I was physically fit and that I could hang in there and even come back in the match.
"At the start I wasn't feeling the ball very well, but I'm very happy with the state of mind I had throughout the match."
Meanwhile, Dmitry Tursunov recorded his first win at the Monte Carlo event after edging Robin Haase 6-1 5-7 6-3, which will see him face fifth seed Tomas Berdych in the second round.
In the final match of the day, Nicolas Mahut of France came from a set down to beat Austrian Dominic Thiem 4-6 6-3 6-2.
