Rafael Nadal admits he needs to sharpen his game ahead of embarking on his favourite segment of the ATP Tour season.

Despite being world No 1, the 27-year-old Spaniard believes he still has work to do before he opens his clay court campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters in two weeks.

The unrivalled 'King of Clay' has won more than 40 titles on the surface - including eight French Opens - and he will arrive in the principality on the back of last week's defeat by Novak Djokovic in the final in Miami.

Nadal said: "It is great that I am in the top of the race arriving to the clay court season.

"But now we start on clay and I need to be 100 per cent. I need to work hard and try to be in better shape for clay."

As for his loss to Djokovic, he added: "To be able to play in the final is a lot of points. I had a few good matches in Miami so that gives me confidence to start a very important part of the season for me."

During last year's European clay court season, Nadal won 26 of his 27 matches - his only loss coming at the hands of Djokovic in Monte Carlo.
