Stanislas Wawrinka survived a mid-match blip to progress to the third round of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami with a 6-0 3-6 6-3 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

The third seed, playing just his fifth match since winning the Australian Open title, made a dream start as he raced through the opening set in just 18 minutes.

However, the Swiss made hard work of the remainder of clash, eventually needing an hour and 28 minutes to see off his Spanish opponent.

Wawrinka dropped serve twice in a shaky second set but hit back with two breaks of his own in the third.

"I started well first set. It wasn't going that well but I was positive, ready," Wawrinka said.

"Problem is I still have some up and down mentally. I was negative in the second set, a little bit stupid, but then I'm really happy the way I started the third set."

Wawrinka will play Edouard Roger-Vasselin in round three after the Frenchman caused a minor shock by dumping out 25th seed Marin Cilic with a 6-2 7-6 (7-5) victory.

No 19 seed Jerzy Janowicz was also sent crashing out after the towering Pole was defeated 6-4 6-1 by Roberto Bautista Agut.

There were no such problems for Tomas Berdych, the seventh seed booking his place in the third round with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win over Stephane Robert.

Elsewhere in the second round, John Isner edged Donald Young 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 in an all-American clash while French seeds Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon were eliminated by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Joao Sousa respectively.
