Dan Evans saw his hopes of reaching the main draw of the ATP Sony Open in Miami come to an end when he suffered a 6-4 6-2 defeat at the hands of Jimmy Wang.

The British no 2 had seen off world number 98 Tim Smyczek on Monday to reach the final round of qualifying and raise the possibility of him breaking into the top 100 in the world rankings.

However, Wang proved too good for the 23-year-old, the man from Taiwan taking a tight first set despite Evans serving up five aces. The second was much more one-sided, though, with Wang - the world no 145 - taking the last five games on the spin.

Evans' exit means Andy Murray will be the only British interest in the Masters Series event.
