Heather Watson: British No 3 went down in straight sets

Heather Watson's run at the BNP Paribas Open came to an end in the second round with defeat by second seed Agnieszka Radwanska.

Watson had no problem breaking serve but held her own just twice in the match and it was Radwanska, who turned 25 on Thursday, who ran out a 6-4 6-3 winner at Indian Wells.

Watson and Radwanska had met twice before, at Wimbledon in 2012 and the Australian Open last year, with the Pole winning easily on both occasions.

But Watson was confident of making it a closer fight this time after a fine start to the season as she battles her way back from the lows of last year.

The 21-year-old has already won 15 matches this year - only one fewer than she managed in the whole of 2013.

She won her first three matches at Indian Wells in straight sets, two in qualifying and then against 16-year-old Swiss Belinda Bencic in the first round on Wednesday.

Watson came out firing on a sparsely populated Stadium 1, forcing two break points in the opening game, but she fired long on both and Radwanska made her pay by winning the first three games.

Drop shot

Watson has worked hard on adding more power to her game but it was a perfect drop shot that set up the chance for her to claw her way back to 3-2.

The British No 3's game-plan was certainly to attack and she levelled at 4-4 after another break apiece, but Radwanska showed her quality when it mattered to win the opener.

Watson called coach Diego Veronelli on court for a quick chat and high five but then made a poor start to the second set before rallying to get on the board at 2-1.

Neither player could hold serve and Watson's frustration was clear as seven successive breaks kept her behind.

That left Radwanska serving for the match and this time she held on.
