Francesca Schiavone: Italian star finally wins first match of 2014
Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone finally won her first match of the season to progress to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
Schiavone had failed to get past her first match in seven tournaments to open the 2014 season, and was on a nine-game losing streak before getting the better of Germany's Mona Barthel 3-6 6-2 6-2 in California.
The Italian has dropped to 44 in the world, from a career high of four, although she has been unlucky with her draws so far in 2014, coming up against the likes of Jelena Jankovic, Dominika Cibulkova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in first-round matches.
Things looked bleak for Schiavone when she dropped the first set but she found some rhythm on serve in the second set and finally showed some of the form that saw her win the French Open title in 2010.
Schiavone's second round opponent will be Sam Stosur, who she beat in that Roland Garros final nearly four years ago.
The other highlight of Thursday's matches saw Zheng Jie battle back from 3-6 1-3 down to Paula Ormaechea to win in three sets and set up a mouth-watering all-China clash with top seed Li Na.
Zheng won five straight games to take the second set but twice threw away a break advantage in the third before winning a deciding tie-break 7-5.
And Germany's Julia Goerges set up a clash with fourth seed Maria Sharapova by beating Jana Cepelova 6-1 2-6 6-3 and there was a 6-2 6-0 win for former top 30 player Aleksandra Wozniak against Urszula Radwanska in a battle of former stars plagued by shoulder problems.
