Latvia's Ernests Gulbis disappointed the home crown by beating favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Marseille Open.

Gulbis won 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in a tight match of just one break, the 25-year-old achieving it in the second set.

Tsonga saved three break points as the first set went to a tie-break which Gulbis edged 7-5.

The Frenchman was under pressure on serve all the way through the second set too, saving seven break points.

"This victory will get me into the world top 20, I know, but my objective is not just to get into the top 20. I want to be the number one."

But finally, on the eighth, Gulbis finally did manage to break him and then served out to love to clinch victory.

It was a fifth career title for Gulbis, who reached the semi-finals in Rotterdam last week.

The flamboyant right-hander was down at a lowly 109 in the world but went into the final as No 23 and is now expected to climb into the top 20 for the first time in his career.

"I played as well as I can do today," said Gulbis. "I felt nervous this morning, but it was a good kind of nerves and it has been a very good weekend.

"This victory will get me into the world top 20, I know, but my objective is not just to get into the top 20. I want to be the number one.

"The best players in the world don't like playing against me. I know that I scare them."

The doubles final provided some consolation for France but disappointment for Great Britain as second seeds Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin beat Jonny Marray and his Australian partner Paul Hanley 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 13-11 via a champions' tie-break.
