The United States will face France at home in April needing to win in order to stay in the Fed Cup World Group for 2015.

The Americans were paired with the French when the play-off draw was made in London on Tuesday morning. The US will have choice of surface at a venue to be determined on the weekend of April 19-20.

Mary Joe Fernandez's team lost to defending champion Italy at the weekend, a result which forced them into the play-offs, the winners of which will stay in the top flight. The losers will drop into World Group II.

France, meanwhile, beat Switzerland to reach the play-off stage and will be looking to return to the top flight under Amelie Mauresmo's captaincy.

Russia will host Argentina, Slovakia will travel to Canada and Spain will be at home to Agnieszka Radwanska's Poland in the other play-offs.

The draw for the World Group II play-offs was also made on Tuesday and the pick of the ties looks to be Romania v Serbia.

Romania ended Great Britain's hopes of reaching the play-off stage by beating them in Budapest last week.

The loser of that April clash will return to compete against GB in Europe/Africa Zone I - the third tier of the competition - in 2015.

World Group I play-off draw:

Russia v Argentina

Canada v Slovakia

USA v France

Spain v Poland

World Group II play-off draw:

Romania v Serbia

Netherlands v Japan

Sweden v Thailand

Brazil v Switzerland
