Tommy Robredo: Saw off fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets
Spanish seeds Tommy Robredo and Marcel Granollers both made it through to the second round of the ATP Copa Claro in Buenos Aires.
Robredo saw off compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4 6-4 after an hour and 25 minutes on court, though he didn't have it all his own way as he managed to save six of the eight break points he faced.
A solitary break was enough to settle a tight second set that saw Carreno Busta waste five opportunities against the third-ranked Robredo serve.
Granollers was also given a stern challenge in his opening match in Argentina, the fifth seed eventually seeing off Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene by a 7-5 3-6 6-2 scoreline.
The world no 34 staved off the threat of being broken on serve on four occasions in a match that lasted two hours and 49 minutes.
It was a welcome first success on clay in 2014 for Granollers, who had fallen to Colombian Santiago Giraldo in straight sets last week in Vina del Mar.
Fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who also lost to Giraldo in the Vina del Mar, going out in the quarter-finals, bowed out in his opening match against home wild card Guido Pella 7-6(8/6) 6-4.
There was mixed news for two other Argentines competing - Federico Delbonis went out 3-6 7-5 6-1 to Spaniard Pablo Andujar, but Carlos Berlocq knocked out Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-4 6-2.
Meanwhile, Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina set up a first-round meeting with top seed and two-time defending champion David Ferrer after seeing off Guilherme Clezar 6-3 4-6 6-4 in qualifying.
