Venus Williams eased into the second round of the Qatar Total Open with a straight sets win over Petra Martic on Monday.

The former world No 1 and seven-time Grand Slam winner claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-2 victory over her Croatian opponent.

Williams, who has slipped to 48th in the women's singles rankings, next faces third seed Petra Kvitova, who progressed thanks to a bye.

In the day's other matches, Annika Beck won an all-German match against Mona Barthel 7-6 (5) 6-2.

Peng Shuai from China defeated Russia's Nadia Petrova 7-6 (5) 7-5 while qualifier Su-Wei Hsieh upset Italy's Flavia Pennetta 7-5 6-3.
