Top seed Fabio Fognini defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-2 6-4 to claim the Royal Guard Open in Chile.

World No 58 Mayer reached the first ATP final of his career in Vina del Mar but was outclassed by his Italian opponent.

Fognini asserted his superiority with two breaks in a first set in which he never faced a break point on his own serve.

The 26-year-old Fognini was playing his fourth successive final on the surface following superb finish to last year's claycourt season, winning his two previous tour titles in Stuttgart and Hamburg and reaching the final in Umag.

He took only one of his eight break points in the second set but it was enough to close out victory.

"I couldn't ask for a better start of the season," said Fognini.

"It's the third title, it's important, and now I go to Buenos Aires with a lot of confidence."
