Gael Monfils secured his fifth career ATP Tour title after upsetting top seed and defending champion Richard Gasquet in an all-French final at the Open Sud de France.

Monfils did not face any break points and hit an impressive 34 winners and nine aces along the way to a 6-4 6-4 victory in Montpellier.

Monfils broke for a 4-3 lead when Gasquet's forehand sailed wide and the 30th-ranked Frenchman fired an ace to take the opening set.

He then capitalised on another forehand error from Gasquet to break serve in the ninth game of the final set and clinched his first title of the season with a service winner.

Monfils, who also won this tournament in 2010, improved his head-to-head record against his fellow countryman to 6-4.

The win - Monfils' first since he claimed the Stockholm Open in October 2011 - follows on from his final loss to Rafael Nadal in Qatar last month.

"Basically, I did not think I was going to play in this tournament and it is strange that I have ended up the winner," said the Parisian.

Meanwhile, Gasquet, who hails from the town of Beziers close to Montpellier, is the current French No 1 and has Spain's Sergi Bruguera as his new coach, said he could not put his opponent under any pressure.

"Obviously I am disappointed to have lost but Gael played well."
