Top seed Fabio Fognini outlasted Nicolas Almagro in a thrilling three-setter to advance to the final of the ATP Royal Guard in Vina del Mar.

Despite being broken when serving for the match in the decider, Fognini regrouped to win the subsequent tie-break as he completed a 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7/5) success.

The 26-year-old Italian has now reached the final of his last four clay-court tournaments and will face Argentina's Leandro Mayer in Sunday's final.

Fognini started much the better against third-seeded Almagro and secured a couple of early breaks on his way to closing out the first set.

But his Spanish opponent responded in impressive style, breaking immediately at the start of the second to get himself back into the contest and going on to level up with some ease.

Late wobble

It was Fognini who looked to have secured the decisive break in the decider, but he could not close it out as he served at 5-3 as Almagro staved off a match to force a tie-break.

But he regrouped and took advantage of his second match-point, clinching victory when Almagro netted a backhand.

Unseeded Mayer reached his first ATP Tour final as he beat Colombia's Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7/2) 6-3 in the other semi.

The 26-year-old, who upset second seed Tommy Robredo earlier in the week, broke his opponent on a total of three occasions as he came through in straights in a little over 90 minutes.
