Top seed Fabio Fognini was given a stern examination by Jeremy Chardy before booking his spot in the semi-finals of the ATP Royal Guard Open in Vina del Mar.

The Italian was taken to three sets by his French opponent and needed nearly two hours before securing a 6-4 3-6 6-2 triumph on the red clay in Chile.

Next up for Fognini, who also reached the semi-finals of the event in 2011, is third-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro who emerged a comfortable victor against Japan's Taro Daniel.

Almagro was always in charge of the contest and came through in straight sets, winning 6-2 7-5.

The other semi-final will pit together two unseeded South American players with Argentina's Leonardo Mayer taking on Colombian Santiago Giraldo.

Both coming from a set down to see off Spanish opponents; Mayer defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 3-6 7-5 6-3 and Giraldo beating seventh seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 3-6 6-4 6-2.
