British No 2 Dan Evans reached the first ATP tour semi-final of his career with a three-set victory over third seed Phillip Kohlschreiber in Zagreb.

The 23-year-old has capitalised on his good fortune this week after losing to Bjorn Phau in qualifying.

Evans was given a second chance as 'lucky loser' after Radek Stepanek pulled out and his stunning victory over world No 27 Kohlschreiber is his third in succession.

It is a breakthrough week for the 147th-ranked Brit, who was overlooked for last week's Davis Cup win against United States.

Evans edged the first set before the German broke for a 3-1 lead in the second, supplementing that with another break to level matters.

But the Briton's serve held up much better in the decider after he had garnered an early break of his own, pulling through 6-4 2-6 6-4 in exactly two hours.

He will play top seed Tommy Haas for a place in the final after the German overcame the threat of Andrey Kuznetsov 7-6 6-4.

In the other half of the draw, Evans's conqueror in qualifying Bjorn Phau continued his run to the last four with a 6-4 6-3 win against Israel's Dudi Sela, while fifth seed Marin Cilic won an all-Croatian tie against fourth-ranked Ivan Dodig 7-5 6-4.

Three-time champion Cilic quickly moved 5-2 ahead only for Dodig to draw level, before Cilic broke again for the set.

Dodig was first to break serve early in the second but Cilic broke back immediately before converting his second match point with a fine passing shot.
