Top seed Fabio Fognini advanced to the quarter-finals of the ATP Royal Guard Open in Vina del Mar on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over Aljaz Bedene.

The Italian triumphed 6-4 7-6 (7/0) against his unseeded Slovenian opponent to earn a quarter-final meeting with Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

The fifth seed won in similar fashion, a second-set tie-break clinching a 6-3 7-6 (7/5) success against Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta.

In other second-round action, third seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain had to battle from a set down to sink Argentinian qualifier Martin Alund 4-6 6-3 6-4, setting up a last-eight meeting with Taro Daniel.

Daniel looked to be heading out of the tournament as eighth-seeded Argentinian Federico Del Bonis romped through the first set. But the 21-year-old Japanese qualifier hit back, saving one match point en route to a 1-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (9/7) win which saw him reach his first ATP World Tour quarter-final.

Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver also progressed on Thursday, toppling defending champion Horacio Zeballos 6-2 6-4. He will next face another Argentinian in Leonardo Mayer, who ousted second-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo on Wednesday.
