France took an unassailable 3-0 lead in their Davis Cup fixture with Australia after Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt in their doubles rubber.

A quarter-final berth was sealed when Gasquet and Tsonga battled back from a set down to win 5-7 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 7-5 on Saturday.

France were joined in the last eight by Germany and Switzerland, who also wrapped up comprehensive victories.

Germany knocked out Spain, Tommy Haas and Philipp Kohlschreiber winning a tight doubles contest with Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (9/11) 7-6 (9/7) 6-3.

Serbia, last year's beaten finalists, went down 3-0 to a Switzerland team boasting Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer.

Neither were in doubles action, though, the two star names watching on as team-mates Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer defeated Filip Krajinovic and Nenad Zimonjic 7-6 (7/3) 3-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-2.

Elsewhere, defending champions Czech Republic moved into a 2-1 lead with Holland as Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek won Saturday's doubles.

Australian Open semi-finalist Berdych and Stepanek needed almost four hours to see off the stern challenge of Dutch pair Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer in the third rubber of the World Group first-round match in Ostrava.

The Czech pair won 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7/2) 7-6 (7/4) to leave themselves one win away from victory, having earlier trailed 1-0.

In other matches, Japan led Canada 2-1 and Kazakhstan were beating Belgium by the same score.
