Karolina Pliskova: The Czech youngster reaches her first WTA semi-final
Karolina Pliskova reached her first WTA semi-final in almost a year after fighting back from two match points down to upset tournament favourite Sorana Cirstea at the Pattaya Open on Friday.
The Czech Republic youngster was 4-5 and 15-40 down in the second set, but managed to hold her serve and then dominate the resulting tie break and deciding set to come through 1-6 7-6 (3) 6-0.
"I didn't expect to win," Pliskova said. "She was playing amazing in the first set and I didn't have any chance to play my game. She was playing fast and she was killing all my second serves.
"In the second set I was just trying to hold my serves and hoped that in the tie break anything could happen."
Pliskova's previous last four appearance was in Kuala Lumpur almost a year ago when she also went on to claim her first and only singles title.
She now faces Julia Georges of Germany who defeated fifth-seeded Elena Vesina of Russia 5-7 6-3 6-4.
Andrea Hlavackova was the second Czech woman to make it through to the semis when she beat eighth-seeded Peng Shuai of China 6-2 7-5.
Hlavackova, a doubles specialist who has two Grand Slam doubles titles, will have to go through Ekaterina Makarova to reach her second singles final after the fourth-seeded Russian overcame veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm from Japan 6-2 4-6 6-4.
