A finalist 12 months ago, the German eventually came through in three sets against Donna Vekic of Croatia in the Thailand event, but the injury has scuppered her chances of going one better than last year.
"It was pretty obvious I wasn't able to serve in the second and third sets," she said. "I love the tournament so much, especially after last year playing in the finals.
"I wanted to do better this year. I tried everything and won the match yesterday and was hoping it could get better overnight, but unfortunately it didn't.
"Now the first plan is for me to get healthy again. I will see my doctors at home and make plans from there."
Czech Andrea Hlavackova now advances to the quarter-finals where she will play either Shuai Peng or Alexandra Dulgeru, who on Tuesday edged past Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in three sets.
Third seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania progressed 6-1 6-3 against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova while fourth seed Ekaterina Makarova came through 3-6 6-2 6-4 against Olga Savchuk.
Fifth seed Elena Vesnina also required a deciding set before overcoming Vania King 7-6 6-7 6-1, while Vera Zvonareva continued her comeback from illness and injury with a 6-3 6-2 win over Thai Peangtarn Plipuech.
Julia Goerges of Germany and Nicha Lertpitaksinchai were other first round winners on Tuesday, beating Luksika Kumkhum and Aleksandra Krunic respectively, in straight sets.
