Defending champions Italy have decided to rest their top players for the Fed Cup first round match against the United States in Cleveland next month.

Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci, Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone have all asked the Italian federation if they can sit out the contest on February 8-9.

Instead, Italy captain Corrado Barazzutti is set to select Camila Giorgi, Karin Knapp, Nastassja Burnett and Alice Matteucci to face the Americans.

The top players cited a travel schedule that over 16 days would have taken them from the Australian Open to the Open GDF Suez in Paris, then Cleveland, then to the Qatar Total Open.

Errani and Vinci won the Australian Open doubles title Friday.

Barazzutti, who will announce her team on Wednesday, said: "We decided to accept the request of our veterans."
