Top seed Juan Martin del Potro made light work of home hope Bernard Tomic who could win just four games in the final of the Sydney International on Saturday.

The world No 5 from Argentina needed only 53 minutes to see of the 21-year-old Australian 6-3 6-1, breaking serve twice in each set for a comfortable triumph.

The 25-year-old del Potro conceded just six points from his eight service games before crossing the finishing line by serving his eighth ace on his first match point.

He dictated play from the baseline with his booming forehand en route to collecting his 18th career title on the ATP Tour.

And del Potro was more than satisfied with his day's work: "Finals are never easy but I was surprised at my level of play tonight. I think I played great.

'Perfect forehand'

"My forehand was perfect. I made a lot of winners, many aces, good slices.

"To start the year in this way it's very positive looking forward for the rest of the season. I need to keep working in the same conditions and the same way.

"Now it's the hardest tournament for us, and I will see if I can go further than last year in Melbourne.

"After two or three matches I started to play much better. My movement was faster than in the first rounds here."

Del Potro now heads to Melbourne for the opening Grand Slam of the year which begins on Monday.

Meanwhile, the German-born world No 52 Tomic - who was the defending champion in Sydney - will have to dust himself down before also heading to Flinders Park where he has been drawn against the top seed Rafael Nadal in the first round.
