Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova suffered a shock exit at the Apia International Sydney.

The second seed had registered the 300th win of career in the quarter-finals, however she will have to wait for victory No 301 after her straight-sets loss to Tsvetana Pironkova.

The Bulgarian qualifier had already claimed the scalp of third seed Sara Errani in the quarter-finals and she reached the first WTA Tour final of her career in style.

The 26-year-old, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2010, took six of her nine break chances to register a 6-4 6-3 win.

Pironkova will now face either fifth seed Angelique Kerber in the final after the German brushed aside Madison Keys.

Kerber broke the American five times en route to a 6-4 6-2 victory.
