British No 1 Laura Robson's return to action at the Hobart International was cut short when she retired from her first-round match against Yanina Wickmayer due to injury.

Robson was playing her first match of the season after a wrist problem forced her out of the ASB Classic in Auckland.

The 19-year-old won the first set 6-4 but, after serving a double fault to gift her Belgian opponent an early break in the second, she pulled out of the match.

It is a further setback for Robson ahead of the Australian Open, which gets under way in her birth city of Melbourne on January 13.

A post on the tournament's official Twitter feed indicated that Robson's injury was a recurrence of her previous problem.

It read: "The official reason for Robson's mid-match retirement today was her wrist."

Stosur survives scare

Top seed Samantha Stosur survived a scare against Madison Brengle to reach the second round.

Stosur lost the opening set on a tie-break before recovering to win 6-7 (7-4) 6-1 7-6 (7-5).

No 2-ranked Kirsten Flipkens brushed aside Marina Erakovic 6-4 6-1, while Bojana Jovanovski, the No 8 seed, also had few issues in booking her place in the next round, beating Annika Beck 7-5 6-3, however fourth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova crashed out 6-3 6-2 against Alison Riske.

Zhang Shuai won the all-Chinese tie against Zheng Jie 6-3 6-1, while Casey Dellacqua toppled Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4 6-4.

Spanish duo Estrella Cabeza Candela and Garbine Muguruza Blanco registered straight-set wins over Karin Knapp and An-Sophie Mestach respectively, however compatriot Silvia Soler Espinosa was beaten 6-7 (9-7) 6-4 6-4 by Kristina Mladenovic.
