Third seed Sara Errani breezed into the second round of the Sydney International after a 6-4 6-2 win over Italian compatriot Roberta Vinci.

Errani needed an hour and 25 minutes to defeat the player with whom she has won three grand slam doubles titles.

Errani, who was beaten in the second round of the Shenzhen Open earlier this week, put in a much-improved performance as the start of the Australian Open closes in.

"The hard thing is not the kind of play because we know each other very well -- it's more playing against your best friend that is very difficult," she said.

"It is not easy to go there and play your best, but I think we played a good match today."

Earlier, American teenager Madison Keys bundled shocked seventh seed Simona Halep 6-1 6-4 to set-up a second-round clash with wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic who beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 7-5.

Keys made the quarter-finals of the Sydney tournament as a 17-year-old and fended off a mini-comeback from Halep in the second set to open up another run for herself.

"She fought to the very end - I was really just trying to focus on playing well and doing what I do well, and I think I did a pretty good job," Keys said.

Eighth seed Sloane Stephens withdrew from the tournament with a wrist injury on Sunday.
