Home favourite Lleyton Hewitt beat sixth seed Feliciano Lopez in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International.

The 32-year-old former Wimbledon and US Open champion fought back from 5-3 down in the first set to claim a 7-5 6-3 win.

He saved nine of the 10 break points he faced, as well as hitting 11 aces against his opponent, in their first meeting since 2007.

Welcoming his win, the Australian told the ATP official website: "Lopez is a quality tour player. He's been seeded at slams for a long time as well. He's crafty out there. It's good to beat quality players, especially on your home soil.

Hang on

"I was just trying to hang on in my service games through the first set and just stay only one break down.

"In the end it worked perfectly because I was able to draw a couple double faults out of him and obviously got that break and then broke again at 6-5. Once I won the first set, I felt like I was really in control."

Hewitt will now face Romanian qualifier Marius Copil, who upset third seed Gilles Simon 7-5 6-3 to progress.

The 23-year-old hit 10 aces and saved four break points as he wrapped up victory in 88 minutes.
