Li Na made untroubled progress into the second round of the Shenzen Open in China as she defeated Russian Vera Zvonareva 7-5 6-3 on Tuesday.
The top seed and home favourite claimed a tight first set by breaking her opponent in the 12th game.
Zvonareva then ran out of steam in the next allowing 31-year-old Li to claim it to ease into the next round.
There was another home victory in the only second-round match of the day as fifth seed Shuai Peng claimed a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
Ukrainian Nadiya Kichenok will face Li in the next round after she took the first set 6-0 against Hungary's Timea Babos who then retired hurt when 2-0 down in the second.
Chan Yung-jan of Chinese Taipei shocked sixth seed Shuai Zhang as she came back from a set down to knock her out.
Zhang claimed the opener 6-3 but Chan fought back to take the next two 6-4 and 6-2 to set up a meeting with Romanian Monica Niculescu who beat Slovakia's Anna Schmiedlova 4-6 6-2 6-3.
