Heather Watson suffered a first round defeat at the Brisbane International, losing in straight sets to the No 9 seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova.
The world No 121 from Guernsey was beaten 6-4 6-3 in just 97 minutes having had to pre-qualify for the first WTA Tour event of the new season.
After the opening eight games all went with serve, Watson was broken in a marathon ninth that witnessed four deuces.
Cibulkova needed four set points to secure the opener before racing into a decisive 4-0 lead in the second.
The world No 23 from Bratislava failed to convert two match points on her own serve in the eighth game of the second set before breaking her 21-year-old opponent in the ninth to seal victory.
Elsewhere, the No 4-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic ousted former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-2 7-6 (8/6).
