Heather Watson: Could not reach the second-tier ITF circuit final in Poitiers
Heather Watson went down 6-4 2-6 6-2 to Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson as her run in Poitiers came to an end in the semi-finals.
The 21-year-old had won three matches at one tournament for the first time all season but could not make it four after a hard-fought three-set tussle.
Although Arvidsson is ranked down at 146, she has been a top-30 player and had beaten Watson comfortably in their last meeting.
The British No 3 has been through a tough week at the second-tier ITF circuit event, having beaten two top-100 players in Alison Riske and fellow American Christina McHale to reach the last four.
And perhaps that caught up with her a little as she faded away in the deciding set against Arvidsson in the city near the Clain river in west central France.
It is nevertheless encouraging to see Watson coping with a succession of lengthy matches given her battle with glandular fever this year.
At 133rd, Watson is currently well outside the cut-off for automatic entry into the Australian Open in January, but further success in the tournament in Barnstaple next week could earn her a direct spot in Melbourne.
