Spain's Marcel Granollers progressed to the second round of the Valencia Open after Janko Tipsarevic was forced to pull out after just three games.

Tipsarevic was leading 2-1 in the first set but had to withdraw due to a heel injury after 19 minutes.

Wildcard Roberto Bautista Agut withstood 15 aces from Kevin Anderson to defeat the eighth seed 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 while Dmitry Tursunov saved all four break points he faced against Albert Montanes to win 6-4 6-1.

In the other match, seventh seed Fabio Fognini beat Martin Klizan 7-5 3-6 6-0.
