Vasek Pospisil clinched a 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 win over Lleyton Hewitt to reach the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Candian Pospisil has had a breakthrough season and the seventh seed lost only four points on his first serve in beating the former world No 1.

Elsewhere in the first round, it was a mixed day for the home players as wild card Dominic Thiem beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4 5-7 6-4 but Andreas Haider-Maurer and Gerard Melzer both lost.

Three qualifiers made it through led by Slovakian Miloslav Mecir - son of the former Olympic gold medallist of the same name - who beat Pablo Andujar 6-4 6-4.

Ruben Bemelmens and Mirza Basic also won but Ilja Bozoljac was beaten in three sets by Robin Haase.
