Vesna Dolonc: Defeated former champion Dominika Cibulkova in first round
Serbian qualifier Vesna Dolonc is through to the second round of the Kremlin Cup after a 3-6 7-5 6-3 win over Dominika Cibulkova in Moscow.
Dolonc came out on top after a two hour and 17 minute battle with 2011 champion Cibulkova, who was seeded ninth after top seed Angelique Kerber withdrew from the event with an abdominal strain.
The pair traded breaks throughout the contest, combining to drop serve 11 times, but it was Dolonc who gained the advantage at the crucial juncture in the deciding set.
Dolonc will next face veteran Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, who recorded a straightforward 6-1 6-2 victory over Arantxa Parra Santonja.
Elsewhere in the first round, sixth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro defeated hope Vera Dushevina 6-4 6-3.
"She (Dushevina) has already played three qualifying matches here so she was well adjusted to the surface. I needed to be 100-percent to win today," Suarez Navarro said.
Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson recovered from being 'bagelled' in the opening set to clinch a 0-6 6-1 6-3 win over Galina Voskoboeva.
