Heather Watson's poor run of form continued as she was knocked out in the first round of the Luxembourg Open by Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer.

British No.3 Watson staged a recovery after losing the first set in just 24 minutes but Wickmayer came through 6-0 5-7 6-2 in one hour and 42 minutes.

Watson's defeat stretched her recent record to just one win in nine matches, a run which has seen her slump out of the world's top 100.

Also on Monday, seeds Lucie Safarova and Bojana Jovanovski safely negotiated their first-round assignments.

Fifth-seeded Czech Safarova saw off Peng Shuai of China 7-5 6-4, while eighth-seeded Serb Jovanovski was a 6-4 6-3 winner against Italy's Francesca Schiavone.

Monica Niculescu prevailed 7-5 6-4 in her all-Romanian battle with Alexandra Cadantu.

The top three seeds - Dane Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens of the United States and Germany's Sabine Lisicki - all start their campaigns on Tuesday.
