Novak Djokovic reached his seventh final of the year thanks to a 6-2 7-5 victory against Jo-Wilfred Tsonga at the Shanghai Masters.

The defending champion recorded his 19th successive win in China by hitting 22 winners and making just 14 unforced errors in a match that lasted one hour and 33 minutes.

Djokovic will next face Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's final after the Argentine surprised new world No 1 Rafael Nadal.

The Serb lost top spot to Nadal last week despite beating the Spaniard in the final of the China Open for his fourth Beijing title in five years.

But he looks like adding another Chinese title to his name after another slick display of returning heaped too much pressure on Tsonga, who unravelled with 35 unforced errors.

Djokovic broke to love in the second game, helped by two double faults, and had a break point to establish a 4-0 lead as seventh-seeded Frenchman Tsonga struggled for consistency on his first serve.

Break

Tsonga dug deep though, securing a break of his own to peg Djokovic back to 3-2 but his form then dipped again and he lost the next three games.

The second set was much more balanced. Djokovic broke first but Tsonga, with a miserable record of eight consecutive defeats against the Serb going into the match, hit back.

The set looked to be heading towards a tie-break but the top seed secured a break in the 12th game, sealing the match on his second match point.

After the match Djokovic, 26, told Sky Sports: "The return of serve and my serving at important moments was very controlled and very efficient.

"I was trying to open up the court, move him around. I know he likes to have targets and play from the backhand corners, so I tried not to (let) him into that comfort zone.

"I played a really good match and it's important for me to reach another final."
