Second seed Sabine Lisicki pulled out of the Japan Open in Osaka, while Sam Stosur and Eugenie Bouchard reached the quarter-finals.

Lisicki was the highest-ranked player in the event following Jelena Jankovic's withdrawal pre-tournament but she needed medical treatment in her first-round win over Chanelle Scheepers and did not start against Polona Hercog.

That gave the Slovenian a free passage through to a last-eight clash with home hope Kurumi Nara, who upset eighth seed Monica Puig 7-5 7-6 (7/4).

Stosur takes over from Lisicki as the highest seed, and she saw off 16-year-old Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-4 6-2.

Fourth seed Bouchard defeated qualifier Luksika Kumkhum 6-2 6-2 and next meets qualifier Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who beat Vania King 2-6 6-3 6-1.
