Frenchman Richard Gasquet suffered a first round exit at the Shanghai Masters to leave his hopes of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in the balance.

The ninth seed was beaten 6-3 6-4 by Canada's Vasek Pospisil, who reached the semi-finals of the Masters tournament in Montreal in August.

Gasquet is currently ninth in the race for the eight spots available at London's O2 Arena next month, although Andy Murray is expected to pull out following back surgery.

Ninth would therefore be enough, but Milos Raonic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are not far behind Frenchman Gasquet.

Pospisil, who next meets Gael Monfils, was delighted with his second victory over a top-10 player.

"It's a huge win for me," said the 23-year-old on atpworldtour.com. "The key was to stay aggressive the whole the time.

"I worked hard the past couple of weeks in practice sets to play that way and I was really proud of myself that when the tight situations came up, I was going for my shots. It worked out today and I'm very happy."

Results

Tenth seed Raonic safely negotiated his first-round test, defeating Poland's Michal Przysiezny 6-4 6-4.

Typhoon Fitow continued to batter Shanghai, meaning all matches had to be played indoors.

Twelfth seed Kei Nishikori was a 6-3 6-4 winner over Grigor Dimitrov, who this week hired Tsonga's former coach Roger Rasheed.

Benoit Paire upset fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4 6-3 but Spanish seeds Nicolas Almagro and Tommy Robredo both won in straight sets.

Italy's Andreas Seppi will play Roger Federer in round two after an impressive 6-4 6-2 win over Lleyton Hewitt while Alexandr Dolgopolov, a 6-1 6-3 winner over Michael Russell, will be new world number one Rafael Nadal's opponent.

Frenchman Jeremy Chardy defeated Bernard Tomic 7-5 6-2, and other first-round winners included Feliciano Lopez, Kevin Anderson, Fabio Fognini, Jurgen Melzer and Fernando Verdasco.
