Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continued his dominance over Gael Monfils to reach the second round of the Japan Open.
Tsonga, the No 2 seed, registered a 6-3 7-6 (10-8) victory to extend his record to four wins in five matches against his compatriot.
Tsonga fired down 11 aces but saw Monfils save three match points before he was able to secure his place in the next round.
Sixth seed Nicolas Almagro also won in straight sets although he was made to work hard by Benjamin Becker.
Almagro eventually overcame the challenge of the German qualifier 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3).
Alexandr Dolgopolov had no such problems as he brushed aside Daniel Brands 6-3 6-1 in his opening match.
Jarkko Nieminen eased past Juan Monaco in straight sets in the day's last
Nieminen won successive points on Monaco's serve to clinch the first set on a tie-break, then broke in the first game of the second and went on to wrap up a 7-6 (7/4) 6-1 win.
