British No 1 Laura Robson defeated Czech Klara Zakopalova in three sets to reach the second round of the China Open.

The 19-year-old Londoner, who was dumped out in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo by Ayumi Morita last week, came through 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-1 against the world No 33.

The win was Robson's first success over a top-50 player since her stunning run to the Wimbledon last 16 earlier this summer.

After holding her nerve in the first-set tie-break Robson, who claimed four breaks of serve in the match, slipped up in the second to send the game to a deciding set.

She was not to be denied, however, as she sealed victory to book a second-round meeting with seventh-seeded German Angelique Kerber.

In the day's other matches, World No 1 Serena Williams cruised past Russian Elena Vesnina 6-4 6-2 in her first match since winning the US Open.

Agnieszka Radwanska lost the opening set to a feisty Stefanie Voegele before recovering her composure to reach the next round.

The Polish world No 4 and 2011 winner in Beijing managed to seal a 4-6 6-4 6-4 victory, despite a stiff test from her Swiss opponent, who is ranked 52 places behind her.

Lucie Safarova upset former US Open champion Samantha Stosur for the second time in less than a week, to record her eighth victory in their last 10 meetings.

The left-handed Czech had already beaten the 15th seeded Australian in the third round of the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo earlier in the week and came through the lastest encounter 7-5 6-3.

Meanwhile, fourth seed and home favourite Li Na swept past veteran Daniela Hantuchova 6-0 6-4 to the delight of the Olympic Park crowd.

Estonia's Kaia Kanepi claimed victory over Germany's Julia Goerges 7-5 6-4 while big-serving American teenager Madison Keys upset Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia 6-4 6-3.
