Joao Sousa set up a meeting with Julien Benneteau in the final of the Malaysian Open after both men upset higher-ranked opposition in their respective semi-finals.

Surprise package Sousa, who stunned top seed David Ferrer to reach the last four, continued to upset the odds by ousting Austrian fourth seed Jurgen Melzer in three sets, winning 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Benneteau outperformed Switzerland's second seed Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4 6-3.

Portugal's Sousa, who recently reached a career-high ranking of 77 after getting to the semi-finals in St Petersburg last week, held his nerve to seal a famous win.

And after the match, the 24-year-old from Guimaraes, told the ATP world tour official website: "It's my first final... I just feel great.

"It's going to be tough... I'm going to give 100 per cent tomorrow to win the title here, for sure. (If I win) it will be good not just for me, but for my country, Portugal."

Hoping to spoil the party will be Frenchman Benneteau, who was beaten to the Rotterdam Open title by Juan Martin Del Potro in February, and the fifth seed in Kuala Lumpur caused another shock by upsetting tournament favourite Wawrinka.

The Swiss world No 10 found himself outgunned by 31-year-old Benneteau, who whipped in three aces to win in an hour and 19 minutes.
