Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai claimed her first WTA singles title after overpowering qualifier Vania King 7-6 (1) 6-1 in the final of Guangzhou Open.

Zhang, who had the home crowd firmly behind her, more than held her own in the narrow first set that went to a tie-break.

But she rammed home a 7-1 advantage before converting her first break point of the match in the opening game of the second set.

The world No 112 then went on to break King two more times to wrap up the match in just over 90 minutes.

Zhang became the first Chinese player to win the Guangzhou Open since Zi Yan in 2005.
