British duo Laura Robson and Johanna Konta both lost in the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou Open on Thursday.
Robson, the third seed, went down 1-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 to former world No 15 Jie Zheng, while qualifier Konta had earlier been beaten 7-5 6-3 by Shuai Zhang.
British No 1 Robson, who lost to Su-Wei Hsieh in the final of the event 12 months ago, dominated the opening set before faltering either side of a rain delay.
The heavens opened with Zheng poised to level the match and she was able to close out the second set tie-break when the players returned.
And Zheng broke twice in the final set to complete victory in two hours and 16 minutes.
Robson was the final seed to fall after Monica Puig and Alize Cornet also bowed out.
Cornet had been the highest-ranked player in the quarter-finals, but the No 2 seed suffered a 6-4 6-1 loss to Yvonne Meusburger, while qualifier Vania King recovered from a shocking start to beat the eighth seed Puig 1-6 7-5 7-6 (7-5).
