Home favourite Eugenie Bouchard upset second seed Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets to advance to the semi-finals of the WTA Bell Challenge in Quebec City.

The fifth-seeded Canadian raced into a 6-3 3-0 and then reeled off three straight games to close out a 6-3 6-2 triumph after the Frenchwoman had briefly threatened a comeback.

Mladenovic, 20, acknowledged her 19-year-old opponent had produced an impressive display.

"The surface is very fast and we were both hitting pretty hard," she said on www.wtatennis.com. "But she was more solid - on the serve, on the return, in the rallies - she just played a really good match."

The result ensured the Quebec-born teenager will break into the world's top 50 on Monday and earned her a last-four clash with Lucie Safarova.

Czech third seed Safarova saw off Lauren Davis 6-2 6-4 earlier in the day, rallying from a break down in the second to sink the seventh-seeded American.

"I played very aggressively from the beginning and took the lead, and in the second set I just kept the pressure on her," 2009 runner-up Safarova said. "I don't think she liked that. But it was nice to play out there with the great crowd."

Saturday's second semi-final will be between Marina Erakovic and Christina McHale, both of whom battled from a set down to win their respective quarter-finals on Friday.

Erakovic, the sixth seed from New Zealand, trailed 4-1 in the decider against Ajla Tomljanovic but kept her cool to oust the Croatian 2-6 6-1 7-5.

McHale was also made to work hard for her place in the last four and was a game away from exiting the tournament at 5-6 down in the second set, but never gave up and was rewarded with a 1-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 win against Slovenia's Polona Hercog.
