Leander Paes became the oldest man to win a grand slam title as he combined with Radek Stepanek to triumph at the men's doubles at the US Open.

Indian Paes, 40, and his Czech team-mate defeated second seeds Alexander Peya of Austria and Brazil's Bruno Soares 6-1 6-3 in the final at Flushing Meadows.

It is the second major for the duo, having previously been crowned champions at the Australian Open last year.

Peya picked up a back injury and needed a medical time-out during the fourth game of the second set, meaning he could only play the rest of the final at walking pace.

"He's a real champion. Thanks for supporting us," Paes said about Stepanek, who missed three months of the season after undergoing spinal surgery.

"Radek helped me to get to be the oldest man to ever win a Grand Slam in the Open era. I thank him for that, and we are definitely not done. I'm going after 41 now, 42, and then 43."

The 2013 champions had knocked out the Bryan brothers in the semi-finals, ending the chance of the Americans completing a calendar slam on home soil.
