Serena Williams ruined Carla Suarez Navarro's birthday celebrations as the defending champion raced into the semi-finals of the US Open without dropping a game.

Suarez Navarro turns 25 today however there was little birthday cheer as Williams secured a 6-0 6-0 victory in just 52 minutes.

There was little surprise in the result, with the Spaniard having won a total of five games in her previous two encounters against Williams.

However Williams believes the conditions - with the wind swirling around Arthur Ashe Stadium - counted in her favour.

Improvement

"She's a great player. The conditions are so tough and it was not her best tennis today," said Williams.

"I've been playing here for like 50 years so I've kind of got used to the conditions."

The victory was the first double bagel in the last eight of the US Open since Martina Navratilova swept aside Manuela Maleeva in 1989.

However Williams claims that she will head in to her semi-final against Li Na knowing that she can play better.

"I played good. I played really good," said the top seed. "I was just more focused than anything. I like to believe there is room for improvement.

"I think it'll be a great match. She's playing some of the best tennis in her career. It will be really tough but I'll come out here and have fun."
