Rafael Nadal will return to Davis Cup action for Spain in their World Group play-off clash against Ukraine later this month.

The world No 2 has not played in the competition since December 2011, missing Spain's last five matches due to the knee injury that sidelined him for seven months.

The left-hander has lifted nine ATP Tour titles since returning to action in February, and he will feature for Spain alongside Tommy Robredo and Fernando Verdasco.

A statement from the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation read: "Rafael Nadal is returning to the team after being absent for the last five play-offs because of a serious knee injury that kept him off the courts for seven months last year."

Robredo has not played in a Davis Cup tie since March 2010, and is is scheduled to play the doubles rubber with Marc Lopez.

Verdasco, who last played in the 2011 final, will be the second singles player as Spain - beaten by Canada in February - bid to avoid relegation from the World Group.
