Rafael Nadal cruised into the second round of the US Open with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over Ryan Harrison.

The second seed had fallen in the first round at the year's previous grand slam at Wimbledon, but had no such problems this time around.

Nadal, who has not lost a match on hard courts this season, broke his opponent's serve five times as he completed a routine victory in two hours and six minutes.

The Spaniard made the perfect start with a break of the Harrison serve and then held off the young American for the rest of the first set.

Nadal's dominance gradually grew and a short rain delay in the second set did nothing to disrupt his rhythm as he eased to victory.

Eighth seed Richard Gasquet also saw off a home hope on the first day of competition, the Frenchman beating Michael Russell 6-3 6-4 6-2.

But 30th seed Ernests Gulibs, who beat Andy Murray at the Rogers Cup in Montreal recently, crashed out to Andreas Haider-Maurer 3-6 6-3 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
